Wedding Themes

by Kathryn Heape - Dream Weddings

When it comes to creating your dream wedding no doubt you have either been planning every detail of the day since you were thirteen or love has caught you completely by surprise. Either way introducing a theme to your wedding will create a focal point and make planning your wedding much easier.

Choosing a 'theme' for your wedding doesn't necessarily mean everyone has to come sporting a Masquerade mask - although that would be fun - a theme reflects the way you want your wedding to look and feel. It adds originality and personality. Creating a theme for your wedding can be as simple or and complex as you want it to be.

The theme can be as subtle as choosing a colour that flows through from your invitations, bridesmaid's dresses, cake, table decorations and flowers, to a Hawaiian Luau, or a dramatic Renaissance theme where the entire bridal party including the minister - and the guests - are dressed in 16th Century costume. The possibilities are endless.

'Where on gods earth do I start?' you cry.

Start in the middle and work out. Decide on the one or two 'must haves' to be incorporated and reflected in your wedding. Is it your dream dress? - You simply must look like a princess. Your favourite location — you will not get married unless it's on a beach. A special hobby or interest you share with your Fiance — you are both avid All Blacks supporters. A particular shape or colour — purple has always been your favourite and you have a particular affinity with love hearts. You may even want to base the theme on your ethnic background. Whatever it is, make those 'must haves' the core elements of your theme and base everything else upon it.

The most important thing is that you are consistent, carry the theme right through every single aspect of your wedding, even the food. Take your love of hearts for example, your last name might be Hart, even better. Heart shaped invitations, a heart shaped cake, heart shaped place name holders and chocolates for the tables. Black and white prints around the venue of hearts drawn in the sand, the bridal gown and bridesmaid dresses could have embroidered hearts of pearls and beads for adornment, the bouquet could be designed in the shape of a heart. Again, the possibilities are endless.

A great idea is to create a theme board. Put pictures of your essential must haves in the middle 'the theme' and add pictures of the other elements around it. Also look outside of Bridal Magazines for inspiration, but don't forget them either! Start collecting fabric samples, paper samples, anything you can lay your hands on and you will soon start to get a fantastic visual representation of how your wedding is going to look and feel and what things are going to work best.

Creating a theme and being consistent with it doesn't mean you have to spend thousands of dollars on coordinating your colours. On the contrary, you can have the most fun by shopping around and 'doing it yourself' with invitations, centrepieces, flowers and decorations. It's as easy as having the same ribbon incorporated in all of these things, be creative.

A few things to keep in mind.

Make sure you are not limiting yourself by choosing a particular theme, do your research and ensure that all elements of the theme you have decided upon are achievable and work well together. That meringue style wedding dress with the four meter train and veil you've been dreaming about is not going to work all that well if you have decided on an oceanic theme and plan to get married on the beach eating fish and chips. You get the idea.

And make sure you maintain a sense or realism about the whole affair. Are you going to look back in ten years time and cringe at your wedding photos because you and all your guests didn't look that fantastic as Elvis' after all.
